Description

The Journal of Economic History & History of Economics publishes and promotes research by both economists and historians in the fields of history of economic thought and economic history. Initially, these disciplines were much closer to each other than they are now, which did both a power of good, but their disciplinary status today, not least because of the cool-off, if not the break-up of their relationship, has been jeopardized.
In the History of Economic Thought, the separation of economic analysis from the historical context has led to the rule of a retrospective/presentist approach which allows positive changes in the discipline only at the cost of the mythologization of its history. As today's mainstream economics is becoming a criterion of the truth, the discipline is turning into a mere drawing up of the family tree of its ideas, with the aim to legitimize them.
As for Economic History, off from the full range of economic ideas, it is turning either into a descriptive historical discipline, limited by a methodically correct, but, nevertheless, mere systematization of historical facts; or it is becoming an applied economic discipline that makes a formal analysis of the latter with the help of the modern mathematical tools and theoretical constructs of the same mainstream. In other words, it treats as simple the phenomena of the past economic reality that are, in fact, very complex in nature. As a result, it propagates historical myths.
The main objective of this journal is to promote close cooperation between the history of economic thought and economic history, giving its pages to the disposal of researchers who work across these disciplines.
