Aitia. Regards sur la culture hellénistique au XXIe siècle

Aitia. Regards sur la culture hellénistique au XXIe siècle is an
electronic international journal, with a primary interest in
Hellenistic culture as a whole. In
the past two decades Hellenistic studies have made remarkable progress
and have undergone major changes of direction. All of this important
period in
literature, art and philosophy has long been regarded with some
indifference by scholars and universities alike, in large part due to
its late period and also
its complexity. Even the idea of a “Hellenistic period”?the period
that begins with the death of Alexander in 323 BC and ends around 30
BC? is actually
rather recent. Yet this is an essential moment in the articulation of
cultural history between the Classical Greek world and the Roman
world, an essential
moment when, notably, literary criticism and the scientific treatment
of texts in the setting of the Museum library at Alexandria come into
being.
However, there exists until now no journal that specializes in this
cultural domain. Long aware of this absence and wishing eagerly to
encourage the
instantiation of a support system that would at once allow for easier
diffusion of scholarship and circulation of information, we have
decided to join the
institutional forces of the École normale supérieure de Lyon (France),
the University of Rome III (Italy), The University of Waterloo
(Canada) and the Ohio
State University to implement an electronic journal that could asnwer
these needs. This journal will be the conduit of advanced research in
the area of
Hellenistic culture formed by our three instituions, and is intended
to become a bridge between Europan and American scholars. The journal
Aitia is
supported by the UMR 5189 HISoMA, the UMR 5037 CERPHI and the WISH.
This journal will favor interdisciplinary methodologies of research,
especially in literature and philosophy. For the emergence of major
schools and
philosophic traditions in this period at Athens and at Rome cannot be
considered independently of their cultural context. At the same time,
we observe
popular philosophy at this period take on an ever greater place in the
whole of cultural life and often come to greatly influence literary
production.
Aitia is intended to have an international circulation, and therefore
publishes articles in various languages (notably French, English,
Italian, German,
Spanish and Greek), with a particular preference for the work of young
scholars. Publication rests with the approval of an international
board of editors.
