Each side is Norway's largest and oldest general cultural magazine,
founded in 1890. The magazine is a leading medium for politics and
culture in Norway and presents a wide range of topics,
authors and genres to describe and analyze our own time; and all in a
format that makes it possible to delve into areas where the Press
rushes past.
Each side wants to show that it is possible to create independent,
free agendas without a major daily newspapers' resources - as long we
as publicists and frees writer is driven by the desire to
promote the significant issues and courageous debates. Articles in
Samtiden often serve as the starting point for debate in a variety of
other media. Samtiden possesses an international focus
and publishes frequently articles from foreign writers and translated
into Norwegian.
In Spring 2008, Samtiden won NRK Kulturnytts ranking of top journals.
In 2007, the Norwegian Newspaper Association chose as Samtiden the
Magazine of the Year.
Former editors of Samtiden Gerhard Gran (1890-1925), Jacob Worm-Müller
(1925-1963), AH Winsnes (1940-1942), John Sannes (1963-1969) and
Torkel Opsahl (1969-1979). From 1979-1988
Samtiden was edited by an editorial committee, supported by Helge
Rønning and Mariken Vaa. Trond Berg Eriksen edited the journal from
1989 until Thomas Hylland Eriksen took over as editor
in 1993. Knut Olav Åmås edited journal in the period 2001-2006. Today
Cathrine Sandnes editor Samtiden.
Samtiden is published by Aschehoug, a publisher and member of the
Norwegian Journal Association, with support from the Norwegian Freedom
of Expression and Culture. The journal is the
only Norwegian partner in the European Journal Eurozine network.
